Calligraphy Experience in the Sky 2025

Calligraphy Experience in the Sky 2025

At the shrine in the heavens overlooking Kyoto,
draw strength from the patriots enshrined here
as you receive purification and pray for your aspirations.

About “Calligraphy Experience in the Sky 2025”

As 2025, the year of the World Expo, draws to a close, why not gather at Reimei Shrine overlooking Japan’s ancient capital, Kyoto, and reflect on the year as a group while holding the two characters you wrote yourself?

Reimei Shrine is also a shrine where patriots of the late Edo period rest.

The Sky Calligraphy Experience begins with a lecture by Maeda Kamari!
After practicing your strokes, you will then write one character reflecting on this year (on a signed board with messages) and one character for the coming year (on an ema votive plaque), guided by Maeda Kamari, in a single stroke on the paper.

And now, we present a calligraphy performance by Kamari Maeda!

Then, pray for your aspirations and walk the path of training to the statue of Sakamoto Ryoma!
This is a precious calligraphy experience under the sky, where you reflect on the past year with everyone and pray for the coming year.

Shrine Introduction

Reimei Shrine

During the reign of Emperor Kōkaku, after enduring great hardship, the Shinto Funeral Grounds were established. To this day, Shinto funerals and memorial services are conducted here to safeguard the peace of the divine spirits. During the Bakumatsu and Meiji Restoration periods, connections were formed with Chōshū domain samurai like Kōsaka Genzui, and funerals were held for loyalist patriots. This is why the graves of patriots, including Sakamoto Ryōma, are located on this sacred mountain.
